Mohania (SC) Assembly Election 2025

Mohania (SC) Assembly Election 2025
Mohania (SC) Assembly constituency

Mohania is a subdivision-level town in Bihar’s Kaimur district, located 17 km from the district headquarters Bhabua. Nearby towns include Sasaram and Uttar Pradesh’s Zamania and Ghazipur. The state capital, Patna, is 180 km away, while Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh lies 60 km from Mohania. The Durgavati River flows near the town, supporting local agriculture. The terrain is mostly flat with some undulating areas, and the region is known for its agricultural prosperity.

Since its creation in 1957, the Mohania Assembly constituency has been a reserved seat for Scheduled Castes (SC). It falls under the Sasaram Lok Sabha constituency and consists of two community development blocks: Kudra and Mohania.

Since 1957, the constituency has elected its MLAs in 17 elections. Over the years, various political parties have won here, including the Congress, Janata Party, Janata Dal, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Janata Dal (United), and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Congress has won the seat five times, while the Praja Socialist Party, BSP, JD(U), BJP, and RJD have won twice each. The Janata Party and Janata Dal have secured victory once each. In the 2020 elections, RJD’s Sangita  Kumari won the seat, defeating BJP’s Niranjan Ram by 12,054 votes. The victory margin widened to 22,014 votes in the Mohania Assembly segment during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, when Congress won the Sasaram seat.

As per the 2011 Census, Mohania had a population of 225,181, with a population density of 810 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio stood at 912 females per 1,000 males, and the literacy rate was 59.78 percent – 67.84 percent among males and 50.95 percent among females.

Kudra, on the other hand, had a population of 165,145 and a density of 787 people per square kilometre. Its sex ratio was slightly lower, at 911 females per 1,000 males, while the literacy rate was marginally higher, at 59.83 percent (67.37 percent males and 51.54 percent females). Together, the two blocks comprise around 356 villages.

Scheduled Castes form the largest voter group in Mohania, accounting for 24.67 percent of the electorate. Muslims constitute 8.3 percent of voters. The constituency is predominantly rural, with only 1.72 percent of voters registered as urban. In the 2020 Assembly elections, Mohania had 270,244 registered voters, which increased to 281,498 in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

Recent elections suggest growing voter awareness in Mohania, with turnout steadily rising. In the 2015 Assembly elections, polling was 56.6 percent, which increased to 59.3 percent in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. By 2020, it crossed the 60 percent mark, reaching 60.05 percent.

The BJP is expected to make a strong push to reclaim Mohania and counter the perception that its influence here is declining. With the NDA more united than ever, the alliance hopes for a better performance in the 2025 polls. Meanwhile, the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan aims to retain its hold after twin victories – the 2020 Assembly elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha polls – and prevent any erosion of its political base.
